Hematologic Examination

Laboratory studies are indicated in accordance with the patient's history and clinical findings. The most commonly used blood test in oral and maxillofacial surgery are as follows:


				Normal Values
		Hematocrit	male 40-50 %
				female 37-45 %
		Hemoglobin      males 14-17 gm/100 ml
				females 12-16 gm/100 ml
		White Blood Cell Count  5,000 to 10,000/mm3
		Platelet Count	150,000 to 350,000/mm3		
		Bleeding Time	Ivy method less than 4 minutes
		Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT) comparison with a control
		Prothrombin Time (PT) comparison with a control 11 -  12.5 seconds
		Blood Glucose 	60-100 mg/100 ml (fasting)
		Potassium	3.5-5.0 mEq/liter
		Sodium		135-147 meq/liter
